21. Individual grants

are given to individuals usually for the purpose of financial aid for education, arts and research. Individual grants for education are given especially to those who excel in their fields but do not have the financial resources to further their studies.

22. In-kind donations or services

are non-cash types of support or assistance given to an individual or organization. These can include materials, equipment or other services useful to a project or program.

23. Literacy grant

a grant program that enables the less-privileged individuals to attain basic knowledge on reading and writing. Beneficiaries of this grant usually include out-of-school-youth, children of poor families, the elderly, mountain settlers, and other types of minority groups. Worldwide, there are many agencies that provide literacy grants.

24. Loan

when a lender gives money or property to a borrower and the borrower agrees to return the property or repay the borrowed money, along with interest, at a predetermined date in the future.

25. LOI

means Letter of Intent. Some funding agencies require grant seekers to submit an LOI to demonstrate their willingness to apply for a grant project. Once the LOI is accepted, grant seekers are then invited to submit their grant proposal application.

26. Matching Funds

a portion of the total cost of a project to be provided by the grant seeker to "match" the funds awarded by a grant making agency. This is usually anywhere from 10 to 15% of the total amount requested. Match funds may be in cash or in kind.

27. Operating grants

are grants given to fund the operating expenses of a specific program or project. Operating expenses can include salaries and wages, rent, utilities and more.

28. Permanent disability grant

a type of disability grant given to those whose disability will last for more than a year.

29. Project grants

the most common form of grant and a large number are found in scientific research, technology development, education, social services, the arts, and health care. Project grants are given to support a specific project or program of an individual or organization.

30. Proposal

a written application backed by supporting documents submitted to a grant making agency for review.
